Are You Feeling Down?

Choosing Joy

It was just supposed to be a little trim. I went in yesterday for the usual snip, expecting nothing more. I’m not exactly sure where the communication break occurred. I was told to look downward…and without hesitation I did.

Ten minutes went by and when my eyes glanced at the mirror, I was surprised by the nightmare.

I have bangs…or what some might mistake for an updated version of the mullet. My hair is choppy and well, weird. Instantly my mind flashed back to years past when my hair had caught on fire. My hair was singed down to an inch from my scalp. I wore hats and bandanas for months and it took years to grow back out.

And now,

I could not keep the tears back. My hairdresser must’ve confused me with someone else. Or maybe she was having a bad day. Or maybe she needs to go to an anger management class. I don’t know. I was too overwhelmed to ask. When I arrived home, the tears welled up. My husband’s response sorta sums it all up, “It’s kinda cute.”

Kinda Cute. What in the world does that mean?

And then I let a lousy haircut wreck me

Funny how a bad haircut…or a zit…or a smart-aleck comment…or 5 extra pounds…can utterly destroy you. Honestly, I want to hide. Or wear a hat. Or keep my hair pulled back in a pony tail.

But I won’t because I know God loves me

Regardless of how I look or how I feel. And I know that He loves you as well. And no matter what emotional wrecked condition you are in today…God loves you just the way you are. And one day, He promises to wipe every tear from your eye (Revelation 21:4). You can take another step forward. Despite what you can see today, God is writing a bigger story.

So today, sista, let’s keep on living. Let’s tackle this darn, worn-out world with fresh eyes. Go forth and keep your eyes upward…and join me in looking beyond our stinkin’ little world. Because, after all, God has created us each with purpose. So let’s not allow the Enemy to get the win. “Greater is He who is in you, than He who is in this world (1 John 4:4).”

“The LORD’S lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. ‘The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I have hope in Him.” Lamentations 3:22-24

Anyone have a hairdresser in Austin to recommend? I’m going to definitely need one!
