I’ll be honest—ANYTHING scares me.
It is such an all-encompassing; all-consuming, giganteus sounding word. It is a word that forms the foundation for Christianity. Being a Christian means that I will follow Christ…and do ANYTHING He asks of me. It is His call for us to obey.
“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” Matthew 4:19
However, I easily get a snag in my hem and can get a bit undone.
What if He asks me to do something difficult?
Following Christ is a journey, a pilgrimage you may say. It means allowing Christ to lead the way—even when the path is uncharted. It can be terrifying to say, “Wherever you go, I will follow.” Luke 9:57
Wherever?
Life’s twists and turns can certainly be hard. Being laid off from your job, having no clue when the next paycheck will come. Fighting for your life against the cancer that beats you up inside. Inwardly aching for an orphaned child to find his way home. Wrestling with unbearable news that your child is not well. In my heart of hearts, I wish I could wave a magic wand and make everything all better. I wish I could fix life’s problems. I wish I had the right words to say. But, I don’t.
All I can do is point you to Him…and suggest you hold tight and follow.
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even thought I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my eneimies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23
One of the best pieces of advice I have ever received is this: Look for the Lesson.
In the midst of the journey, in your ANYTHING, ask God to reveal Himself to you. What is He trying to teach you? What can you learn from Him?
“Make me know your way, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.” Psalm 25:4-5
